Attack is used to determine if an attack successfully hits the target or if it misses.

Attack Formula
Formula for finding Atack
Attack = d(20) + Base Attack + | STR MOD + Size Bonus
Success Condition
If the Attack is greater than the opponents Armor Class (AC) then the attack is successful. Otherwise it is a miss.
Automatic Hit
If the d20 roll lands on a 20 then the attack automatically hits, no matter what the opponents AC is. This also sets up for a Critical Hit.
Critical
After a 20 is rolled another attack roll is made (using the formula above). If the attack is a hit (greater than the opponents AC) then the attack becomes Critical and deals double the damage. If the second roll is not a hit (even if it is a 1) then the attack is just a normal attack. Missing on this second roll just means the critical hit missed, but the regular hit still made it through.
Automatic Miss
If the d20 roll is a 1 then the attack is an automatic miss, no matter what the opponent's AC is.
